St Francis Fall Short in Seaside Thriller

Seaford 22215 St Francis Friars

St Francis Friars returned to The Salt Rec for a second time this month to take part in their rescheduled fixture against Seaford 2s.

The weather was a surprise element for both teams with a bright and hot Saturday afternoon that was perfect for some running rugby.

Seaford were first to cross the line after some well worked moves with their backline catching the Friars defence off guard - a second try then followed from Seaford and the Friars released they had to dig deep to get back into the game.

Both teams were evenly matched physically with the team's defence going hammer and tongs at each other. Eventually a try was rewarded after a slick over head kick saw the Friar's scrum half catch Seaford's defence napping.

At half time the Friars were still trailing but having caught their breathes and picked their heads up they started the second half with a converted try and further penalty to take them level at 15-15

Despite some strong running in the backs lead by skipper Minnis the Friars were unable to break Seaford's strong defence.

Eventually Seaford clinched a last minute try to take them in the lead 22-15 and despite a valiant effort the Friars were unable to fight back for a draw.

The Friar's welcomed full time debuts for their second row Egleton and Williamson - Willamson put in a man of the match display with his debut and showed he is a star in the making. Friar's also welcomed back their backrow Lace whose defensive work in the backrow has been sorely missed.

Friar's will need to work harder if they want to maintain their position as third in the league. Next weekend sees them face Heathfield and Waldron.
