Tries: Minnis 2, Graves Sr 2, Poole Sr
Cons: Graves Jr 2
After a draw and a loss the newly invigorated Friars 2nd XV were desperate to get a win under their belts and their opportunity finally came this weekend as they faced East Grinstead 3s at their home ground in Southgate.
Friar's Captain Minnis was first over the try line in the opening minutes to set out the marker that the Friars meant business today and the try was successfully converted by Matt Graves.
The game was incredibly lively with teams testing each others defence all over the pitch but after a ferocious turnover in the scrum the Saints finally gained another try through full back Damian Poole as he read a well worked run from scrum half McCardle to score in the corner giving the Saints an extra lead.
East Grinstead hit back just before half time with a strong try but failed to convert over the posts.
In the second half the Saint's turned up the tempo and despite some strong attacks from the East Grinstead backs the Saint's bagged another two tries through Vice Captain Mark Graves capitalising on a fantastic work from the pack!
East Grinstead almost snagged another try to get back into the game but unfortunately a foot in touch lead the try to be disallowed.
The teams continued to battle up and down the park only for the Friar's Captain to strike again and score after slipping through the tired East Grinstead defence killing any hope of a fight back from the visiting opponents.
The Friars put in a dogged performance with some standout performances from their back row in Christenson, McCormack and the retuning Wiseman. Honourable mentions to Baker who was solid in his first run out at Hooker for Saints and also to McCardle whose performance was key to three of the tries scored by the Saints.
Well done to the players who stepped up and offered to play for the opposition to make a more even contest and so both teams could enjoy a run out in the spirit of rugby.
