St Francis suffered their second defeat of the season as they lost 19 – 8 away to Newick.
It was a physical encounter for the Saints as after the first 15 minutes Newick went over for the first try in the far corner. Shortly afterwards Newick went over again to take the score to 12 – 0.
This then sparked St Francis into life, which led to a great break from Thomas Bruce, who was about to offload to a winger in free space to potentially score a try, if it was not for a Newick player to deliberately knock the ball on (the Newick player was sin binned for this offence).
Unfortunately for the Saints they couldn’t make the extra man count as they went into half time 12 – 3 down.
Determined to make amends for the mediocre first half showing St Francis started to play to their game plan, while taking full of advantage of playing downhill on the slopped pitch at Newick.
St Francis got their reward for territory midway through the second half after Warren Schultz scored after a superb break from the constant threat at scrum half – Ben Searle.
Unfortunately for the Saints they could not capitalise on the territory they gained and were lacking that final a bit of composure in the opposition’s 22.
Newick finished with the last score off the game to end the well fought game 19 – 8.
St Francis' next game will see them entertain Worthing Azzurians at home whilst the Friars are at away to Seaford 3.
