Saints Thump Thales

St Francis6531 Thales

Tries: Matthews 2, Searle 2, Minnis, Goodayle, Lampclough 2, McGahan, Crawley, Poole
Cons: Crawley 5

St Francis finally kicked off their pre-season with a friendly game organised against local company Thales. The match was their first home game to be watched under new coach Bob Aldridge so the Saint's squad had a lot to prove to stake claim for their 1st XV team.

With any first game of the season the first half was littered with nervy errors which boiled down to just getting the basics right and knocking the cobwebs off-however the Saints still started strong with a try from winger Minnis that was then followed by another by debutant full back Goodayle. But the young Thales outfit proved a handful with a collection of individuals who kept getting through the Saint's defence almost giving them a lead in the first half. That lead was cut short just before the half time whistle after a well worked set piece from the forwards saw McGahan go through and followed by skipper Lampclough.

In the second half the Saints had finally found their groove and opened up the floodgates with a bundle of tries and only conceding 7 points! Tries from Crawley, Matthews, Searle, and Poole in the opening twenty minutes secured a comfortable lead for the Saints which they continued to capitalise from.

Coach Aldridge had rung some changes mixing in debutants with experience and there were some eye catching displays by Griffin, Lashely, Miller, Hewett, and Ellis!

After the game Coach Bob Aldridge stated :'St Francis have opened the book on this season well, with some good structured phase play, and solid set pieces showing through, particularly in the second half. Thales put us under good pressure in the first half, and once we had refocused, the true capabilities of the squad as a whole showed through. I am confident that we have a positive season ahead of us.'
