Saints Wallop Worthing

St Francis380 Worthing Azurians

Tries: Morrisey 2, Searle, Stoffberg, Crawley, Pique
Cons: Crawley 4

St Francis RFC and new coach Bob Aldridge's season got off to a flying start this weekend with an emphatic win over Aldridge's former club in their Harvey Sussex Plate Cup game.

This was the clubs first competitive match under Aldridge and his first opportunity to see his blue print operating on the field which has proved already to be a successful formula.

The club has seen the return of former players Searle and Bruce to bolster their squad but also welcomed new players Morrissey and Peacocke who have made notable impressions to the team. Morrissey in particular had put in an incredibly physical man of the match performance complete with two well worked tries.

Elsewhere on the field veteran Sparkes proved he still has the game time in him to go up against the youth and held his own at scrum time. Callan was a human wrecking ball creating havoc for Worthing's defence whilst Crawley stole a number of line outs and then slotted 4 conversions from the boot - continuing to prove that forwards can kick points too!

In the backs the pairing of Bruce and Morgan held a solid defence whilst Pique was an ever present nuisance to the opposition bagging one try but was close to adding a couple more.

Coach Aldridge commented: "With players returning to the squad from injury last season and a successful summer recruitment programme, selection for our first round Cup match was challenging, however, St Francis started strong from the first whistle securing two tries in less than five minutes. We stuck to our game plan throughout the game, putting increasing pressure on a well balanced Worthing side, and not complacent in the second half, working hard to increase the score line - whilst maintaining an unbreakable defence until the final whistle blew. All in all a pleasing result from a constantly developing, committed and tenacious squad".

St Francis 1st XV host Guernsey's St Jacque next week alongside their development team the Friar's whom face Newick 2s. The club continues to welcome players familiar or new to game so please get in touch if you are interested in joining in.
